The US and China have agreed to halt new tariffs and engage in talks, avoiding the escalation of a global trade war between the world's two biggest economies. The US president, Donald Trump, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, met for dinner on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, where they brokered the de-escalation. The US had planned to increase tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports on January 1 from 10 to 25 per cent, but that increase has been delayed while both sides try to reach a permanent agreement within the next 90 days.
Firefighters have been struggling to contain over 100 blazes across Queensland. The blazes have blackened tens of thousands of hectares and caused the evacuation of hundreds of residents. The weather bureau says severe bushfire conditions are expected to continue until Tuesday.
The White House has announced that a national day of mourning will be held next Wednesday for the former president George H.W. Bush who's died at the age of 94. The US president Donald Trump said at the G20 summit in Argentina that the death of the 41st president saddened the leaders gathered there.
And in sport, defending champions Melbourne Victory have thrashed the Western Sydney Wanderers 4-nil at Docklands.
